FAQs
Our Story
A group of passionate individuals witnessed the Nile’s plight firsthand and decided to take action. We began organizing clean-up events, engaging communities, and advocating for policy changes to protect the river.
VeryNile is driven by the dedicated Bassita team of environmentalists, entrepreneurs, and social activists. While individual identities often take a backseat to the collective mission, you can learn more about our team on our “LinkedIn” page.
Working with Nile Communities
Instead of “convincing,” we focused on building trust and partnerships. We recognized fishermen as guardians of the Nile and provided fair wages and social services for their participation in clean-up efforts. It’s a mutually beneficial collaboration: they help us clean the river, and we empower them to become stewards of their environment.
Creativity and Community
Driven by a desire to transform waste into beauty, we established a workshop where local artisans learn upcycling techniques and create stunning products from reclaimed plastic. It’s a space for creativity, income generation, and environmental awareness.
Most Common Misunderstandings
While plastic bags contribute to the problem, the workshop primarily uses post-consumer plastic from various sources, including the Egyptian Clothing Bank.
While we share goals with NGOs, VeryNile operates as a social enterprise. This means we combine social impact with a sustainable business model to support our ongoing work.
We appreciate the dedication of volunteers, but our core team is composed of passionate professionals who work full-time to drive VeryNile’s mission forward.
While community participation is crucial, we purchase the waste directly from fishermen who collect it from the Nile. This provides them with an income stream and incentivizes responsible waste management.
Due to safety considerations and logistical planning, volunteer efforts are best coordinated through group registrations with a designated coordinator. This allows us to ensure a smooth and impactful experience for everyone involved.
